The
School of
Human Life Sciences offers exercise
assessment, prescription and counselling services to individuals who have been
referred by their General Practitioner under the "Chronic Disease Management
Plan" (CDM). All services are performed
in Building 14 at the Launceston Campus of the
University of
Tasmania.
What is an Exercise Physiologist?
Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are university-trained
professionals qualified to perform fitness assessments and prescribe exercise to
a variety of clients from the very healthy to the chronically ill. The Australian Association for Exercise and
Sports Science (AAESS), the professional organisation responsible for EP accreditation,
sets strict guidelines for membership and accreditation to ensure an
outstanding level of services provided by EPs (see http://www.aaess.com.au).
At present there are accredited EPs available at the
University of
Tasmania to provide safe fitness
assessment and physical activity counselling. These EP's have expertise and established research careers in the fields
of exercise and cardiovascular disease, diabetes/metabolism and ageing.
Who are these services available to?
People with chronic conditions and complex care needs who
are being managed under an Enhanced Primary Care plan by their General
Practitioner are eligible for a Medicare rebate for EP services (under Medicare
Plus). The Chronic Disease Management
(CDM) items include, but are not limited to, the management of heart disease,
diabetes, obesity, asthma, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis and
mental health conditions. Seven out of
10 consultations by General Practitioners within
Australia
are chronic-disease
related.
